Scanning the YFI Custom Home photograph library, it was interesting to note that many of the ceiling designs are varied and impart a critical design element. In the hands of a skillful custom builder, your ceiling is a blank canvas and can be an integral part of the creative impact of any room in your home and office. Here are some examples taken from past YFI projects.
A coffered ceiling consists of a pattern of indentations or recesses in the overhead surface. Using an architectural definition, a “coffer” is a sunken panel in a ceiling. Below are some imaginative examples of coffered ceilings constructed by YFI Custom Homes.
Cathedral ceilings are a popular solution to increase the illusion of volume in a room. The sides of a cathedral ceiling have equal slope, reach the highest peak of the room and attach to the roof trusses as illustrated in this cheerful dining room built by YFI.
A vaulted ceiling is a version of a cathedral ceiling but has unequal sides meeting at the room’s highest point. In both the cathedral ceiling and vaulted ceiling, the ceiling angles upward on one or both sides to create volume in the room.
Another iteration of the vaulted ceiling would be a barrel vaulted ceiling which is used to great effect in this serene master bedroom. The barrel vault is semi-circular in shape and forms a consistent arch from one end of the room to the other.
A good suggestion when using a ceiling higher than a conventional ceiling would be install a ceiling fan as it will push warm air down to mix with cooler air and create a warmer average temperature during the colder months. The reverse would be true in warmer periods.
